OUR DOCTORS

Adult & Pediatric Spinal Deformity Correction (Scoliosis or kyphosis correction)

spine deformity can be defined as an abnormality in the shape , curvature, and flexibility of the spine. Spinal alignment and curvature can be altered in many ways. They can occur as a result of birth defect, a child’s growth, aging, injury, or previous surgery.

The different types of spinal deformities include:

kyphosis

Is a condition where an abnormal curvature of the spine occurs in the thoracic (chest) region, resulting in the round appearance of the back. Kyphosis is a type of spinal deformity, known as hunchback or humpback

Lordosis

Is a condition characterized by abnormal excessive curvature of the spine and is some times called swayback.

Scoliosis

is a condition where the spine or backbone is curved sideways instead of appearing in a straight line. It curves like an “S” or “C” shape. When the curves are exaggerated, pronounced problems can occur such as back pain, breathing difficulties, and fatigue. A surgical procedure is done to correct, control and balance a spinal deformity in adults and children. Deformity correction is achieved using rods, screws, wires, and cages. The surgery is usually performed from the back of the spine, although it can also be done through the side depending on the case. Scoliosis surgery straightens the spine’s curve and fuses the individual spinal segments and joints involved in the curve. This surgery has been proven to be both safe and effective. While severe scoliotic curves cannot be completely straightened, they can frequently be significantly improved.

Spinal Tumor Resection

This is a surgical procedure to remove a benign or malignant (cancerous) growth from the spine. Tumors may impose strain on the spine and create major neurological difficulties due to their placement. The part of the spine which has been removed is usually stabilized with plates, pedicle screws, wires, and expandable cages.

Spinal Fracture Fixation

The most common cause of many lumbar breaks can either be trauma or osteoporosis. The fixation of the lumbar fracture is often required if the fracture is unstable or if a bone presses onto the spinal cord or nerve root causes any loss of function. Plates and pedicle screws, as well as hooks and wires, can be used according to the severity of the damage. The goal is to fuse the bone pieces together in all cases. This can be done either as an open procedure or as minimally invasive surgery.

Spinal Infection Treatment

This is a surgical procedure to remove a collection of pus (infection) from the spinal column. The pus can sometimes collect around the spinal cord or nerve root, causing it to be compressed. Following the drainage of the pus, the spine is occasionally stabilized using screws, rods, and, in more rare circumstances, cages.

Spinal Vertebroplasty

In this vertebral augmentation procedure, spinal cement is injected directly into the fracture site to strengthen and stabilizes the site. There is no manipulation of the vertebra from within using instruments. It’s normally used in fractured spine and the cement injected moves between the fracture fragments and binds them together in the position that they are in. Which alleviates pain by strengthening and solidifying the damaged vertebra.

KYPHOPLASTY

A kyphoplasty procedure uses x-ray guidance to place a needle through a small incision in the back and into the vertebral compression fracture. After the needle is accurately placed, a balloon is slowly inflated to help restore vertebral height and form a new cavity. Spinal cement is then injected into the new cavity and quickly hardens.
